United Way of Greater Niagara announces 'Zero donation' campaign goal

With a renewed community impact strategy in place, United Way of Greater Niagara announced its "Zero donation" campaign goal for the 2014 community care campaign. Instead, leaders announced an "investment" campaign goal of $1.275 million, the organization's largest fundraising effort.

"Our renewed efforts to impact current and future issues by investing in programs that address education, health and income is why we are not asking for a donation, rather an investment in United Way," said Marilyn Lojek, co-chair for this year's community campaign. "With a stronger emphasis on measurable results, we ask for your support to help make Niagara County a better place today and tomorrow. Over 44 programs receive support from your one investment to the community care fund."

The campaign traditionally seeks to raise resources to support programs and services across Niagara County through a combination of corporate and individual supporters.

"Your investment will support programs that assist young children - our most vulnerable population - to be ready to learn when they enter kindergarten," said Dr. Brendan Dowd, Community Campaign co-chair. "Programs that work with seniors, the disabled and individuals from all walks of life are supported by your one investment. Please join us in investing in the United Way."

The campaign will run until the end of November.

United Way of Greater Niagara has successfully reached its campaign goal each of the past four years, raising a total of more than $5 million during that time. This year's goal is the same as last year's goal.

"The needs of our community are as great as ever," said Carol G. Houwaart-Diez, president of the organization. "At the same time, we need to be cognizant of the pressures and strains facing employers and individuals from across the area. We take an objective look at every factor when determining our campaign goal."

United Way representatives and volunteers are meeting with businesses across the county to help coordinate internal campaigns in support of the 2014 campaign.
