Children can get a running start on Halloween at the New York Power Authority's annual "Halloween Spooktacular" Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Power Vista, the visitors center for NYPA's Niagara Power Project in Lewiston.

The admission-free celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There's a costume contest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in two age categories: children ages 9 and younger, and children ages 10 to 15. Costumes will be judged on originality, creativity and overall appearance. Prizes will be awarded at 2:30 p.m.

Patrons can enjoy crafts from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation's Interpretive Center, and a haunted house and free hayrides - weather-permitting - from the Lockport YMCA Teen Leaders.

Niagara University's College of Education and its Family Literacy Center will hold Halloween-themed literacy activities for children grades K-8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be 20-minute sessions led by graduate and undergraduate students. Space is limited, so sign-up early. Parental materials will be available.

Boy Scout Troop 855 of Lewiston will offer free games and food for sale.

State Parks also will provide free rides on its Niagara Scenic Trolley between the Power Vista and the nearby Niagara Gorge Discovery Center.

Guests are invited to enjoy the Power Vista's interactive exhibits and displays on energy, electricity and area history, as well as unique views from an observation deck 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge.

Admission and parking are free at the Power Vista, located at 5777 Lewiston Road. For more information, call 716-286-6661 or email [email protected].
