The British set fire to the White House 200 years ago during the War of 1812. Some people think what happened next could be considered a miracle. This topic, along with several other improbable events that saved this country, will be discussed by local author Lee Simonson at the Sanborn Historical Society regular meeting: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Sanborn Firehall, 5811 Buffalo St.

"Some of the things that happened are more like 'Ripley's Believe It or Not,' but each provided a critical tipping point in America's creation and survival," Simonson said. "Does God have a hand in America's success? Did miracles really happen? We'll examine the evidence and folks can come to their own conclusions."

Simonson was the recipient of the national Spirit of 1812 award in Washington, D.C., in April, and was honored with the Town of Lewiston Citizen of the Year award in May. He is a past president of the Historical Association of Lewiston.

Admission to the "8 Miracles That Saved America" program is free and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served and donations accepted.
