The German American Musicians, "Buffalo's Big German Band," have kicked off their 81st season by performing free summer concerts around Western New York. Their fourth and final performance will take place at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7-9 p.m.

Thanks to a generous grant from the County of Erie, this concert series is free and open to the public.

"We are excited to be playing in front of audiences that may not normally get the chance to see our band in action," said Melanie Hachten, spokeswoman for the German American Musicians. "When people hear German band, they automatically think omp pah music and Oktoberfest celebrations. Our cultural organization is that and so much more, especially since we are in possession of one of the largest and oldest German music libraries in the country, outside of Germany."

Every year, the German American Musicians find themselves very busy, performing at many different Oktoberfest celebrations around the area. Like the Oktoberfests the German American Musicians perform at, each summer concert has showcased music that is traditional to Germans, such as waltzes, rheinlanders, polkas, marches and music to shunkel to. Musicians have even performed newer musical selections that have focused on the more modern day music of Germany.

The concert is free and will be held outdoors behind the conservatory.
