Town residents were encouraged by the Town Board to fight hunger in the world by supporting the local CROP Walk.

The board issued a town proclamation during its monthly meeting Monday at Town Hall before its regular agenda of business. CROP, Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, is celebrating its 27th anniversary on the Island.

CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service to raise money to end hunger locally, across the country and around the world. GI will host its CROP Walk beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Beaver Island State Park.

In making the proclamation, the board "hereby encourages all residents to support CROP ... by walking or supporting someone else who will be walking." The proclamation further noted that one-quarter of all money raised by the GI CROP Walk is returned to the Island.

"It would be great if all of you came and walked with us," said CROP Walk's Grand Island chairman, Cathy Rieley-Goddard, to those in attendance at the Town Board meeting. "It's a beautiful day in September. CROP Walk committee member R.J. Wynne noted walkers can choose between 1-mile, 3-mile or 5-mile walks.
