The New York State Department of Transportation announced Thursday travel restrictions are scheduled to go in effect on Route 384 (Buffalo Avenue), and Interstate 190, in the City of Niagara Falls, to allow for the continuing construction of new bridges carrying the I-190 over Buffalo Avenue.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 23, at approximately noon, Buffalo Avenue between 63rd and 65th streets will be closed to all traffic. In addition, I-190 Exit 21 to Buffalo Avenue also will be closed.

These closures are expected to last for approximately five weeks.

The DOT said motorists will be directed to follow posted detour routes and should allow for additional travel time. The DOT further advised motorists that, during these closures, the ramp from the I-190 northbound to the Robert Moses State Parkway toward Niagara Falls State Park will remain open. This ramp is restricted for non-commercial traffic only due to low vehicle clearance.

On Thursday, Sept. 25, at approximately 8 p.m., the I-190, from the North Grand Island Bridge to the LaSalle Expressway, will be subject to "lane closures and traffic stoppages no greater than 15 minutes in duration." The DOT said traffic will be diverted onto temporary detour ramps, and the posted speed limit in this work zone will be reduced to 35 mph. The lane closures on the I-190 are scheduled to be removed no later than 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29. New York State Police will provide traffic control.

Motorists are reminded fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver's license.
