Bank provides financial support for science-based educational opportunities for at-risk students

The First Niagara Foundation and Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, in conjunction with Buffalo Public Schools, announce the culmination of the 2014 "Young Environmental Leaders Program." Students were invited for selection in the program last spring, and have spent the summer months completing a science-based curriculum on environmental preservation and fresh water restoration.

The First Niagara Foundation has provided $7,500 in funding to support and implement the resources for the program. Twenty at-risk students have engaged in active learning activities that include kayaking, habitat restoration and landscape design.

"Through unique, field-based experiences, intense discussions of local environmental problems and community building workshops, the 'Young Environmental Leaders Program' is introducing students to Riverkeeper's work and the vast environmental assets of our region," said Jill Jedlicka, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper executive director. "We want students to develop a sense of hope for the future, pride in their community, and inspiration to take a leadership role in the transformation of Western New York into an exciting, environmentally sustainable, and healthy place to live."

"First Niagara is proud to support the 'Young Environmental Leaders Program,' and create opportunities for young people to learn about environmental issues and engage in hands-on activities," said Buford Sears, First Niagara regional president, Western New York. "This collaboration with Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper will enhance our natural resources and empower the student participants to be our next generation of successful leaders."
