The Niagara County Department of Health Nursing Division, in partnership with the Niagara County Department for the Aging, is offering free diabetes self-management workshops.

A workshop is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Lockport Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 75 East Ave. It consists of six consecutive weekly classes that run from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Another workshop will begin Friday, Sept. 12, at the Pendleton Town Hall, 6570 Campbell Blvd. It runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The program offers proven health benefits for people with diabetes, and complements the health care an individual may already be receiving. The workshop is designed to help participants enhance their skills to maintain active and fulfilling lifestyles.

Workshop participants will improve problem-solving and decision-making skills to confront the ever-changing challenges of living with diabetes. They will learn how to improve food choices and increase physical activity to maintain weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.

In Niagara Falls, the DOH will offer a free diabetes prevention program beginning Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Trott Access Building, 1001 11th St. Classes run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Program participants will learn the skills they need to make lasting changes, such as losing a modest amount of weight, being more physically active and managing stress.

If your doctor has told you you're pre-diabetic and you would like to register for the class, call the county DOH at 716-278-1900.

Those with diabetes, or a caregiver of someone with diabetes and interested in registering for a diabetes self-management workshop program, can call NY Connects through the Office for the Aging at 716-438-3030 or the DOH at 716-278-1900.
