A new beginning in Youngstown

As residents now realize, the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co.'s legendary Field Days is history. But that doesn't mean an end; rather, a new beginning.

"The End of Summer Celebration" is a new socializing experience in the form of a beer tent, complete with foods and entertainment, to be open Friday, Aug. 29, and Saturday, Aug. 30, in a new location: across from the firehall on the park grounds.

"Starting this year, the YVFC is hosting a new venue," said YVFC Midway Committee Chairman Greg Quarantillo. "You don't need to save Labor Day for Youngstown any more; spend it with your family."

But do include a visit to Veterans Park in your plans, he said.

Similar in socializing fun to the traditional tent parties of year's past, held on the Field Days grounds (see above), Quarantillo noted Friday and Saturday nights would offer food, beer, wine and games of chance, plus tear tickets available in the tent starting at 6 p.m.

Entertainment both days kicks off at 8 p.m., with Friday featuring Amp'd Up, with Teasers and 7th Heaven. 90 West will be on stage Saturday.

Quarantillo said visitors also can expect a return of Field Days favorite Welch's french fries among the tasty food offerings both nights. And fireworks will be a part of the fun both evenings.

He invites area residents to come out, enjoy the experience, and support the services of Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co.

"Please come and support your fire company. Your donations are critical; without you, we wouldn't exist," said Quarantillo.

A new ambulance is expected this summer.
