Sally Trietley Mergel, 83, of Grand Island was called to heaven at home Aug. 17, 2014, surrounded by family and comforted by her devoted husband of 24 years, Philip Mergel.

Sally was born May 23, 1931. She loved to travel, and together with her husband visited Europe four times and traveled throughout the United States in an RV, stopping to picnic along the way and to enjoy the countless national parks and scenic destinations. Her love of travel was rivaled only by the pride she felt for her Irish heritage. Until recently, she unfailingly attended the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and celebration in the City of Buffalo. An avid gardener, Sally also relished the time she spent tending to her backyard garden.

Sally loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren. The memories made fishing with Ian, her day trips with Taylor, and visiting Christopher and Victoria in California were cherished, and she would light up whenever talking about them.

Sally was predeceased by her son, Bob Trietley, and is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Alan) Kley; a son, Timothy (Claudia) Trietley; stepsons Gary (Flora) Mergel and Greg (Marie) Mergel; grandchildren Ian and Taylor Kley and Christopher and Victoria Trietley; a sister, Linda Bialek, and brother Stuart Allen. She also fondly remembered countless friends and family members, including Lauren (Adam) Mazenauer, Matthew (Amanda) Mergel, Brendan, Courtney, and Alanna Mergel.

Friends may gather Friday, Aug. 22, at Fretthold Funeral Home, 1241 Oliver St., North Tonawanda, between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. There will be a memorial service at the funeral home Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m.
