School districts are not only responsible for the education of their students, but their safety, too. The school staff not only needs to know what to do in the cases of fire or severe weather, but how to handle suspicious packages, bomb threats, hazardous accidents and shooting incidents.

Recently at an administrative retreat, Niagara-Wheatfield Superintendent Dr. Lynn Fusco invited local law enforcement officials to help them enhance school safety measures. Niagara County Sheriff's Undersheriff Michael Filicetti, Chief Deputy Steven Preisch and Deputy Robert Richards; Lewiston Police Officer Anthony Nicoletti; and State Trooper John Campanella thanked the administrative team for inviting them, saying they were the first school district in Niagara County to do so.

The team went over the Homeland Security checklist to help the district prepare for emergencies that involve an active shooter scenario and also to go over any ways the schools can harden their security vulnerabilities.

The purpose of the program was to educate school administrative personnel on proper response to an active shooter situation, how law enforcement responds to active shooter situations, and what school personnel can do to mitigate injury and the loss of life in an active shooter situation.

Fusco thanked the team for helping them to provide the safest environment available for their students and staff and says she will consider having the team come in and work with the schools on a drill for an active shooter situation in the future.
