Parks and gardens along the historic Niagara Portage will be the featured destinations Saturday, Aug. 9, as four city institutions present a series of outdoor activities for people of all ages.

The event, titled "Grand Gardens of the Niagara Portage," will take place at various times throughout the day at the Niagara Falls Public Library, Oakwood Cemetery, Schoellkopf Park and the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center.

The Niagara Falls Public Library, 1425 Main St., will feature its Learning Garden, where activities will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for children, teens, and adults.

Oakwood Cemetery, 763 Portage Road, will offer tree identification and distinguished persons tours, a master gardener presentation and a garden dedication ceremony. Events at Oakwood will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Memorial Medical Center's Schoellkopf Park, on Portage Road between Pine and Walnut avenues, will host events from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured will be a tour by Joy Kuebler, the park's award-winning landscape architect, along with yoga and tai chi in the park. Members of the Schoellkopf Garden Club will be on hand to answer questions about the park.

The Niagara Arts & Cultural Center, 1201 Pine Ave., will host family-friendly events from 1 to 3 p.m. Featured will be a community garden tour, petting zoo, field games and summer art camp activities for kids. Visitors also will learn how a community garden promotes good health through good food, and receive information about Greenprints and the citywide vacant lot initiative.

"Grand Gardens of the Niagara Portage" has been organized by Oakwood Cemetery Event Chairman Pete Ames, a member of the cemetery's board of directors.

When asked about the diversity of the participating locations, Ames said, "We gathered to discuss the project, and everyone liked the idea of partnering together for the day. As the four groups are so diverse in their particular missions, they are offering a wide range of activities. All of them are family-friendly and cover topics related to gardens, nature, health, history and so on."

A map and schedule of the day's activities for "Grand Gardens of the Niagara Portage" is posted on the Oakwood Cemetery website at www.myoakwoodcemetery.com. For more information, contact Ames at [email protected].
