Obit: Vivian Fay Smudski

Vivian Fay Smudski died March 10, 2014, at her assisted living home in North Tonawanda.

Her son, Jan, daughter, Daya, and five grandchildren survive her: Tim, Karl, Amar, Michael and Mathew. She shall find comfort joining her beloved daughter Elizabeth and husband Allen in the hereafter.

Vivian moved to Grand Island in 1957 and left for assisted living in North Tonawanda in 2007. She had her 100th birthday party on July 9, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.

Vivian was born in 1913 in Superior, Neb. She was a World War II veteran and served in the Army as a first lieutenant from 1943 to 1946. Part of her service saw her crossing the Atlantic in a convoy. The ship she was on had 10 women and 10,000 troops. She met her husband, Allen, at Cornell University, married and moved to Grand Island in the mid-1950s while their children were young. She served as a dietitian and teacher at the Buffalo School of Nursing. She was a member of the Grand Island Garden Club for about 40 years.

A memorial dinner of family and friends to celebrate her life will be will be held Friday, March 14. Her ashes will be buried next to her beloved husband Allen on Grand Island.
