NYPA to bury time capsule at Niagara Power Vista

The New York Power Authority will conclude its Niagara Power Vista 50^th anniversary celebration with the burial of a time capsule on Saturday, July 19.

Visitors can share their past and present memories of the Power Vista by signing the time capsule message banner in the reception area.

The closing ceremony begins at 3 p.m. when the banner and other Power Vista memorabilia will be placed in the capsule and sealed by Niagara Power Project Regional Manager Harry Francois. The capsule will be buried on-site at a later date and remain buried for the next 50 years.

University Heights Art Association Co-Founder Larry Kinney, a Buffalo sculptor who judges the Power Vista's annual "Every Day is Earth Day" sculpture contest, designed the time capsule.

Special screenings of the Niagara Project's 50^th anniversary video are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Relive the construction of New York state's largest electric-generating facility through the eyes of the "Niagara Hardhats," the men and women who built the project.

Guided tours through the Power Vista are available at 10 a.m., noon and 1 p.m., and will include hair-raising demonstrations.

Visitors are also invited to enjoy more than 50 displays and interactive exhibits on electricity, energy efficiency and area history, along with unique views from an observation deck 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge.
