Kaleida Health announces chief medical officer appointments

Colin J. McMahon, M.D., has been named vice president and chief medical officer at Buffalo General Medical Center, and Stephen J. Turkovich, M.D., has been named vice president and chief medical officer at Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo.

Both appointments are effective immediately.

McMahon most recently was the medical director of hospital operations at Buffalo General, while Turkovich previously served as quality and patient safety officer and the co-medical director of the newborn nursery at Women & Children's Hospital.

"Physician leadership is imperative if we are going to change culture, improve quality, safety and service to the patients that we serve," said David Hughes, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer for Kaleida Health. "Drs. McMahon and Turkovich are outstanding leaders and will serve as direct, on-site medical administration to facilitate our patient experience and quality of care initiatives."

As reported previously, George Narby, M.D., was named associate chief medical officer for Kaleida Health. Narby, who served as Kaleida Health's interim CMO earlier this year, will continue to serve as the site CMO for Millard Fillmore Suburban and DeGraff Memorial hospitals.

A resident of Orchard Park, McMahon received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the State University of New York College at Fredonia, and his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has also served as the director of adult services at Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo and pediatric medical director at HighPointe on Michigan.

McMahon was the recipient of the Burt P. Flickinger, Jr. Award, Medical Professional of the Year (2009), and is a member of the American Medical Association, American Society of Internal Medicine and American College of Physicians. He is also chairman for the Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo Foundation's "Festival of Trees."

A resident of Buffalo, Turkovich received his Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology as well as his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.  He completed his pediatric residency at the University of Rochester, Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong. He currently serves as a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics for UB.

Turkovich has won numerous awards and honors over the past 10 years, including the Business First "Healthcare 50" designation and the UB School of Medicine's "Medical Alumni Award for Community Service and Commitment." He is a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics and member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
