1,300 participants expected

It's a ringer for the local economy: The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association World Tournament is expected to bring a few thousand visitors to Buffalo this week.

The tournament, taking place from July 14-26 at the Hamburg Fairgrounds Event Center, will draw 1,300 participants and their friends and family - nearly 3,000 total visitors hailing from across the country and six Canadian provinces. It will have an estimated economic impact of $2 million, according to the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission, a subsidiary of Visit Buffalo Niagara.

The sports commission was instrumental in bidding on, securing, providing the seed money for planning and preparing for the event. The BNSC worked in concert with the New York State Horseshoe Pitcher's Association and the Hamburg Fairgrounds to bring the event to Buffalo.

"Attracting the NHPA World Tournament and other sporting events to Buffalo is a fantastic way to showcase our region to visitors and boost the local economy," said Chuck Giglia, BNSC director of sports sales. "While the tournament attendees are here, they will also be eating in our restaurants, staying in our hotels and exploring the best that Buffalo/Niagara has to offer."

The association is excited to host its 2014 tournament in Buffalo.

"The Buffalo/Niagara area offers many attractions and activities for our members, from the Canalside district and Olmsted Parks, to casinos, tours and, of course, Niagara Falls, which will make this the ultimate vacation destination for the families of the NHPA," said Stuart Sipma, NHPA president and world tournament coordinator.

"The Hamburg Fairgrounds Event Center has potential to be one of the best venues for our event in recent years," he added. "We are looking forward to working with the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission and all others responsible for bringing our tournament to your area to make this the best event you have hosted, as well as the best tournament our entrants will have ever participated in."

The public is welcome to attend the tournament for free; for more information and a tournament schedule, visit www.horseshoepitching.com.

The NHPA is a federation of 60 charters in the U.S. and Canada, each with numerous club affiliates and individual members. Each state association is self-governing. The NHPA strives to promote and organize the sport and to standardize the rules, equipment and playing procedures. The top priority is to serve as a unifying agent between state associations, local clubs, unorganized groups and individual players. The NHPA sanctions the annual World Tournament, state association tournaments, regional and open events, and a league program.

The Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission is a subsidiary of Visit Buffalo Niagara, which promotes Buffalo and Erie County nationally and internationally as a premier sports tourism destination for the economic benefit of the community by boosting hotel occupancy and encouraging visitor spending.
