Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for June 27, 2014

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 202 calls from June 14 to 20. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 10 burglary false alarm calls and four fire alarms during the dates of this report.

Saturday, June 14

•Ransom Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that an intoxicated male subject was pounding on his door during the late hours of the night. The male left on foot prior to the arrival of patrol. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject.

•Love Road, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 31-year-old man from Grand Island for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration (a misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions after a Department of Motor Vehicles check showed the registration was currently suspended for parking violations. The man was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Grand Island Boulevard, parking complaint - Employees of a business stated there was a vehicle parked on their lot with no one around it. Deputies contacted the registered owner to remove the vehicle.

•West River Road, open door - After responding to a residential burglary alarm, deputies located an unlocked door to the premises. The residence was searched but no persons were located inside. The open door was determined to be an oversight.

•Ransom Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime during the prior day, someone threw a frozen water balloon at the windshield of her vehicle, causing it to break.

•Jenell Drive, residential burglary - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent months, someone stole various jewelry from her residence.

•Majestic Woods Drive, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a pickup truck was speeding down the street. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle by the description given.

•Huth Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence somewhere in the neighborhood during the early evening hours. Deputies checked the area and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

•White Tail Run, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a party at a nearby residence. Deputies located the source of the music and advised the homeowner.

•Stony Point Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths were walking up and down driveways and appeared to be looking into vehicles during the late hours of the evening. Deputies located several youths in the area, and their investigation led to the arrest of one juvenile offender for possession of alcohol by a person under the age of 21. The juvenile offender was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

Sunday, June 15

•Jenell Drive, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music and vulgar language was coming from a nearby residence. Deputies located the residence in question and advised the homeowner. No loud music or vulgar language was heard by patrol.

•Queens Drive, open door - A complainant stated that she came home and found a door open to her residence during the late hours of the night. Deputies checked the residence but found no persons inside. The open door was determined to be an oversight.

•Grand Island Boulevard, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Bedell Road, burglary - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone broke into his storage unit and stole various items from inside. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Hidden Oak Court, animal loose - A complainant stated her dog got loose from her yard. The dog control officer was notified.

•Tracey Lane, criminal possession of stolen property - The Erie County Sheriff's Office was contacted by the Peel Regional Police Department (Ontario, Canada) to assist in an investigation of a stolen vehicle. A member of the Peel Regional Police Department stated that the vehicle was located at a Tracey Lane address on Grand Island. Deputies' investigation led to the arrest of a 78-year-old man from Grand Island for criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree (a class D felony) and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in the third degree (a class A misdemeanor). The man was taken to the Town of Grand Island Court where he was arraigned on the charges. The stolen vehicle was recovered and impounded to ensure recovery by the owner.

•East Park Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke to the occupants and determined no one was in need of police assistance.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - Employees of a business stated that a known male subject attempted to steal various items from the store. The subject fled in a motor vehicle prior to the arrival of patrol. All of the merchandise the subject was attempting to steal was recovered. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Monday, June 16

•Grand Island Boulevard, road obstruction - Deputies removed a large plastic tote that was in the middle of the roadway.

•South State Parkway, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a dark-colored vehicle was traveling the wrong way down the road. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any vehicles traveling in the wrong direction.

•East River Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby bar during the late evening hours. Deputies determined the music to be within allowable limits and advised the bartender, who turned music down anyway.

Tuesday, June 17

•Bedell Road, warrant arrest - Deputies arrested a 34-year-old man from Tonawanda after serving a warrant issued from the City of Buffalo. The man was turned over to the custody of the Buffalo Police Department.

•Grand Island Boulevard, customer trouble - A cab driver states that a customer was refusing to pay for her cab fare. Deputies advised both parties and the subject paid the fare.

•Carl Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Park Place, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a male subject was walking down the street and threatening the complainant. Deputies located and advised both parties.

•Whitehaven Road, drunk driving - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 32-year-old man from Grand Island for driving while intoxicated, obstruction of governmental administration in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions. The man refused to submit a sample of his breath for chemical analysis. He was charged with felony DWI due to a previous DWI conviction in the past 10 years and was then transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending his arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Love Road, unwelcome guest - Employees of a business stated that an ex-employee was on location and refused to leave the premises. Deputies located the subject, who left without incident.

Wednesday, June 18

•Baseline Road, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 30-year-old man from Grand Island for aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree (a misdemeanor), operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration (a misdemeanor) and another traffic infraction after a DMV check showed his license was currently suspended. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Winter Road, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a vehicle parked at a closed business during the late hours of the night. No persons were observed in the area. The business was checked and determined to be secure.

•East River Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of a person who applied for a pistol permit.

•Stony Point Road, marijuana possession - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a juvenile offender for unlawful possession of marijuana and several traffic infractions. The juvenile offender was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Harvey Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke to the occupants and determined the call to be a phone line malfunction.

•Love Road, property found - A complainant stated she found an unattended bicycle on the pedestrian overpass. The bicycle was turned over to patrol and taken to the sheriff's substation.

•Harvey Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke to the occupants and determined the call to be a phone line malfunction.

Thursday, June 19

•West River Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent weeks, someone stole items from his unlocked vehicle.

•Stony Point Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Baseline Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•West River Road, animal loose - A complainant stated a dog was running loose in the neighborhood. The dog was reunited with its owner.

•Bush Road, suspicious person - Deputies located a subject on a bicycle on the property of WBEN. The subject was advised and left without incident.

•Oakridge Drive, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that, after going outside in the yard, she returned to her residence to find all the doors locked from the inside. Deputies checked the residence but found no persons inside. Nothing was reported stolen.

Friday, June 20

•Monica Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of a person who applied for a pistol permit.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•East River Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Beaver Island State Park, noxious odor - A complainant stated there was an odor of natural gas near the bath house in the park. Deputies checked and determined the complaint to be unfounded.
