On Saturday, July 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. Niagara Hospice will hold its 11th annual Memorial Butterfly Release in the Memorial Gardens located at 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport.

In many cultures, butterflies are recognized as a universal symbol of hope and meaning, making them the perfect way to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones. The event is open to the community, and organizers invite families and individuals to release butterflies in memory or in honor of someone special to them.

In addition to the release, activities for the whole family will take place, including a bounce house, kids' games, balloon art, refreshments, and live music by Step in Time.

Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator Mandy Raff said that more than 350 butterflies are released into the gardens each year.

"The butterfly release is definitely one of our most-loved events," she said. "It provides an opportunity for families and individuals to celebrate the people closest to them, and it brings the community together in a very special way."

To purchase live butterflies, hand-painted sun catchers, and butterfly plants, call the Niagara Hospice Alliance at 716-280-0766 or visit www.NiagaraHospice.org to order online or print an order form. (Live butterflies are pre-sale only, and must be ordered by July 9).

All proceeds benefit Niagara Hospice.
