Lewiston police responded with Lewiston No. 1 Volunteer Fire Co. late Thursday night to a one-vehicle accident at Center and North Fifth streets. Upon investigation, patrol reported a 21-year-old male operator struck an electrical pole, which was in danger of collapsing, and threatened a second pole a few feet away. As a result, that portion of Fifth Street was closed to the public.

The accident triggered power outages at First Niagara Bank and Casa Antica restaurant. National Grid crews were on site Thursday and again Friday morning. They said they expected power to return to the businesses in short order.

The motorist, a Lewiston resident, was arrested for driving while intoxicated and other vehicle/traffic violations. He was taken to the State Police Niagara substation for blood-alcohol content testing. The male's B.A.C. was reported as .16 of 1 percent. (photos by Wayne Peters and Joshua Maloni)
