Niagara University hosting Empowering Volunteers Conference

Border Community SERVICE of Niagara University is hosting a free community preparedness conference Saturday, May 17. The Empowering Volunteers Conference is designed to provide training opportunities and workshops detailing best practices in personal and community preparedness initiatives. The event is for community volunteers and leaders in Niagara County, Erie County and the City of Buffalo.

The conference will begin at 9 a.m. in the Castellani Art Museum on the Niagara University campus with a keynote address on "Cyber Footprints: Computer-Related Investigations" by James Markovich, special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. 

The conference will have morning and afternoon breakout sessions in St. Vincent's Hall on the following topics:

•Impostor detection presented by John Chiarello, training instructor, Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy

•Introduction to canning presented by Greg Merriam, Elma CERT

•Introduction to chemical facility anti-terrorism standards presented by John Waszak, chemical security inspector, U.S. Department of Homeland Security

•"Transportation Systems in Disaster: Assessing Vulnerability in Communities" presented by Fred Frank, LEED AP BD+C senior planner, Parsons Brinckerhoff

•"Safety and Preparedness for Our Weather: A Look at What Not to Do" presented by Judy Levan, warning coordination meteorologist, National Weather Service

•"Faith Based Response to Disasters/VOAD's" presented by the Rev. John Klatt, Evangelical Lutheran Church; Rev. Rick Koch, United Methodist Church; Jan Tyson, Presbytery of WNY

A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided, compliments of Border Community SERVICE, and a raffle drawing of various preparedness items will take place at the conclusion of the conference.

There is no charge for this conference, but participants must preregister by Thursday, May 15. Individuals can register online at www.niagara.edu/border-community-service or by calling the office at 716-205-0077.

The mission of Border Community SERVICE (special emergency response volunteer initiative for community empowerment) of Niagara University is to provide emergency preparedness training to citizens and to encourage their participation in opportunities that enhance regional emergency readiness.
