The Zonta Club of Grand Island has cooked up a unique way to dish up recipes and raise funds for scholarships at the same time - it's the club's new cookbook "Zonta Rocks the Recipes."

Filled with 195 recipes from Zonta members, friends and family, it's got your proverbial soup to nuts, plus a whole lot more. The book starts with appetizers, then takes you through the day's meals, from breakfast to dessert, with a musical theme carried out in drawings by longtime Grand Island art teacher Lyn Laman, a Zonta member.

Many members submitted family recipes that have been handed down for years. For example, some favorite recipes are included by the late Joanne Carr, who wrote the "Cooking Grand" column for the Island Dispatch from 2004-07. Her daughter, Karen Keefe, is a Zonta member.

"It's great to be able to share cherished recipes with fellow Islanders, to carry on traditions that mean so much to us," Keefe said.

Published by Morris Press Cookbooks, the book is filled with helpful hints on counting calories; pantry basics; baking secrets for perfect pies, cookies and cakes; cooking terms; measurements and equivalencies; quick fixes for cooking mistakes; and even elegant tips for formal dining, such as napkin folding and place settings.

Historical facts and photos on the Zonta Club and its mission are included in opening pages of the book. Zonta International is a worldwide service organization whose goal is to advance the status of women. It was founded in 1919 in Buffalo. Locally, the club has raised more than $105,000 for scholarships for women.

The books are $15 and can be picked up by appointment at the offices of Niagara Frontier Publications, 1859 Whitehaven Road. Call Karen at 716-773-7676.

The books will also be available at the club's major fundraising event of the year, the Spring Fashion Fling, at noon on Sunday, April 6, at River Oaks, 210 Whitehaven Road. Tickets are available from Zonta members or by calling Susan Berger at Flower A Day, 716-773-4252.
