Artpark dedicates 'The Sound of Music' to Brother Augustine Towey

Visionary leader remembered for his passion and involvement in theater community

As Artpark prepares for an eight-show run of the popular musical "The Sound of Music," it is impossible to forget Brother Augustine Towey, C.M., the late visionary leader of Western New York's theater community and how special he was to Artpark's theater program development. The last time Artpark produced "The Sound of Music," in 1997, Brother Augustine served as director of the musical. In a special tribute, Artpark has dedicated its 2013 production, running July 11-19, to the memory of Brother Augustine.

Before the opening night performance on July 11 at 8 p.m., The Rev. Joseph Levesque, C.M., Niagara University president, will make a brief tribute to Brother Augustine.

"Bro" as he was affectionately known in the theater world, is credited with developing Niagara University's theater program into one of the most respected in the U.S. He taught literature, speech and directed more than 135 plays at Niagara University. His involvement with the NU Theatre Players led to the current acclaimed theater program.

Brother Augustine directed at Artpark, Opera Sacra, Irish Classical Theatre Company and with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the founder and director of Artpark Repertory Theatre from its inception in 1975 until 2003. In 1994, Artpark & Company honored Brother Augustine for his contributions to the arts in Western New York by dedicating a chair in the Mainstage Theater to him. He went on to receive many awards in the region for his work in the arts.

The Western New York theater community said goodbye to Brother Augustine on Thanksgiving. The local theater community remembers Bro for building up programs and nurturing countless actors in his lifetime.

Eight performances of "The Sound of Music" will be presented in the Mainstage Theater July 11-19.
