Friends of the Youngstown Free Library have announced a membership drive, with incentives to join during the month of April. The Friends will raffle 10 gift certificates for $20 each to Youngstown-area businesses for any person or family who joins by May 1.

"Our Friends group is made up of enthusiastic and community-minded people from Youngstown and the Town of Porter," said Charlotte Viscio Clark, president of the Friends board of directors. "When we become members, we primarily show our support for the resources that the library provides to the community. Secondly, we give a small donation that allows the Friends to fundraise throughout the year."

With its slogan, "Make a BFF (best friend forever) become a friend of the Youngstown Free Library," the campaign seeks to revive interest and participation in the Friends.

"Over the past five years, our membership numbers have declined a bit," Clark said. "We feel it's important to work toward increasing our numbers, because having a library in Youngstown is so valuable. We believe we live in an area where people recognize this and we hope they will respond with gusto."

Membership is $5 person, $10 per family and $25 per supporting member. Forms are available at the library, located in the Red Brick Village Center, 240 Lockport St., or at www.youngstownfreelibrary.org.

In order to be entered into the raffle, membership must be received the 7 p.m. May 1. Winners will be drawn at the May 1 "Members' Night" gathering and spring book sale at the Red Brick.

The Friends has a membership of 250. It is run by a volunteer board, and meets every third Wednesday of the month. For more, visit www.youngstownfreelibrary.org or call 716-745-3555.
