Stands ready to teach to the standards

As schools commence the second half of the year, parents and students are continuing to acclimate to the changes taking place as a result of the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. The Huntington Learning Center of Kenmore is making adjustments of its own, said Sara Young, center director.

"We recognize that the families we serve rely on us to have the most up-to-date curriculum and practices so that we can ensure that students are equipped with the skills to succeed in school today," she said. "The introduction of Common Core means much higher expectations for students and an enhanced focus on college and career readiness - extending all the way to even the earliest grades."

Young said Huntington has taught to rigorous standards for more than 30 years, but has now taken a number of steps to adjust its programs in the era of Common Core:

•Huntington has revised its math and English-language arts curriculum to adhere to the Common Core State Standards - in Huntington's tutoring programs as well as its SAT/PSAT and ACT test preparation programs.

•Huntington has elevated its focus overall on college and career readiness throughout its programs.

•All Huntington teachers have been trained on the Common Core State Standards and how they impact teachers, schools and teaching strategies.

•Throughout its programs, Huntington has heightened its emphasis on key standards objectives, such as problem solving, critical thinking, citing evidence and defending conclusions.

"Our role is to help students achieve their goals - whether those goals are to earn certain college entrance exam scores, raise grades or overcome problem areas," Young said. "We know that Common Core has made waves in education and has many parents concerned about how to navigate such big changes. As always, we are here for questions and support."
