Donor presents league with $25K challenge grant

An anonymous donor has provided what some are calling a "Christmas miracle" to the Miracle League of Grand Island and Western New York.

The league announced it is the recipient of a $60,000 grant from an anonymous donor, as well as a $25,000 challenge grant, toward the construction of a disability-friendly playground adjacent to the Miracle League field in Veterans Park.

The challenge grant offers $25,000 if the league can raise $25,000 now through April.

"We have to raise $25,000 to get the $25,000," said Islander Dan Drexelius of the Miracle League. "I'm real excited because I think we're going to make it."

Drexelius said an anonymous foundation gave a $60,000 donation "and I was truly amazed that they threw in another $25,000 challenge grant so we could raise more funds for the playground."

The donations, "combined with the generous contributions of all supporters and the substantial earnings from the Summer Carnival will allow ground breaking for the construction of the planned playground to begin in the spring of 2014," the league said in a statement.
