Gil C. Quiniones, New York Power Authority president and CEO, offered this comment on NYPA's participation in the "Grid Ex II" power grid drill:

"The New York Power Authority is participating on Wednesday and Thursday (Nov. 13-14) in a major power system drill that will test emergency response plans of electric utilities, governments and law enforcement authorities across North America to simulated attacks on the electric power grid.

"The integral nature of the power grid to virtually all facets of modern life makes its security against physical and cyber-attacks of vital importance. This week's two-day 'Grid Ex II' exercise, organized by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, will provide valuable experiences for responding to potential assaults on the power-grid and safeguarding the system.

"As the owner and operator of more than 1,400-circuit miles of transmission lines - one-third of the high-voltage transmission in New York state - the Power Authority recognizes the necessity of ensuring the resiliency of the power grid and emergency readiness. To that end, key NYPA personnel in engineering, operations, security, information technology, emergency management and other functional areas will participate in the exercise, operating from their usual work locations.

"It is important to emphasize that there will be no disruption in electrical service from the simulated events."
