Lewiston Town Councilman and Ernest Palmer, candidate for town supervisor, announced today he will oppose a proposal submitted by Quasar Energy Group of Ohio to build a lagoon on Porter Center Road and fill it with 6.5 million gallons of biological waste.

The group plans to use a process known as anaerobic digestion to break down solid waste products from treatment facilities, along with grease and food products to produce a fertilizer called "equate," which would be spread in liquid form on farm fields. The product can only be used a few months a year and must be stored for future use. The food produced on these fields cannot be used for human consumption until 38 months have passed.

"For far too long, Lewiston has been the end destination for garbage and waste," Palmer said. "We must break this cycle and put an end to it. I will work with my colleagues on the Town Board to make sure this proposal is defeated."

The Niagara County Planning Board approved the proposal 5-2 last week, while the Town of Lewiston Planning Board and the Environmental Commission both tabled the proposed action. The proposed site is northeast of Swann Road.

Palmer encourages residents to join him in signing a petition against the proposal at www.protectlewiston.com. Additionally, residents can voice their concerns at the Town Board meeting Monday at 6 p.m.

"Enough is enough," Palmer said. "They want to put this lagoon within 900 feet of existing single family homes with children. Take it somewhere else."
