Enuel "Matthew" Caraballo, a Niagara University freshman from Brooklyn, will receive the 2013 Overcoming Obstacles Student Achievement Award from the Community for Education Foundation at an Oct. 24 dinner to be held at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.

Along with the honor, Caraballo will receive a $10,000 scholarship to use toward postsecondary education.

"Your accomplishments, insight, intelligence and passion for helping others make you a deserving honoree," wrote Erin Capone, executive director of the Community for Education Foundation, in a congratulatory letter.

Caraballo's biography will appear in souvenir dinner journal at the Oct. 24 event, and the education major will also deliver a two-minute acceptance speech.

The Community for Education Foundation was founded in 1992 by Jill Siegal Chalsty to ensure all students learn the communication, decision-making and goal-setting skills they need to be successful in life.

Each year, the organization recognizes Overcoming Obstacles students who have used the communication, decision-making, and goal-setting skills they learned through the program to successfully overcome challenges in their lives.

Since 1995, the Community for Education Foundation has honored some of the nation's finest citizens for embodying the spirit of the Overcoming Obstacles Life Skills Program. This year's honorees join a prestigious group of individuals recognized at the event, including Muhammad Ali, Marian Wright Edelman, the 1999 World Cup Champion U.S. Women's Soccer Team, and CEO Kenneth Chenault of American Express.

Caraballo participates in the Niagara University Opportunity Program, which is designed for students who have the potential for and interest in furthering their education, but are not admissible under NU's standard admissions criteria.

"NUOP students and staff are thrilled about Enuel Matthew Caraballo winning this award," said Lisa A. Rivera, an academic counselor in the program. "In his short time here at Niagara University, he has shown himself to be a motivated and serious student, eager to join in campus activities and committed to achieving success both in and out of the classroom. It is of no surprise that others have taken note that Matthew is a person of integrity and high morals, and have recognized him with this prestigious honor."
