Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center announced this month it will operate 10 service sites across Niagara County in support of NY State of Health, the official health plan marketplace designed to help people shop for and enroll in health insurance coverage.

New York State of Health, the official health plan marketplace, is a new way for people to shop for, compare and enroll in health coverage. It is also the only place to get a new kind of financial assistance provided by the federal government to lower the cost of one's health coverage.

Memorial was awarded a grant from the New York State Department of Health to serve as a navigator agency for Niagara County to help consumers apply for health insurance through the marketplace.

In-person assistors/navigators are certified and trained to educate and provide enrollment assistance to individuals and small businesses about the health insurance options available through the marketplace. IPAs/navigators can assist individuals and families, as well as small businesses and their employees. IPA/navigators are available in convenient, community-based locations throughout the county and are available weekdays, evenings and even on weekends, and all help is free.

"Assistor/navigators will explain coverage options, provide coverage comparisons, help with plan selection, and support consumers in filing online health insurance applications at disability accessible sites across Niagara County," said Memorial Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Sheila K. Kee. "These free services will be available six days a week, including Saturdays and evenings, for the convenience of consumers."

The marketplace provides individuals and their families with many new health insurance options. Individuals can quickly compare health plan options and apply for assistance that could lower the cost of health coverage. Individuals and families may also qualify for free or low-cost coverage from Medicaid or Child Health Plus through the marketplace. Anyone who needs health coverage can apply.

Qualified Health Plans can be purchased now and will be effective Jan. 1, 2014.
