PO affords residents new mailing service

Postmaster Moynihan announced today that a new "Stamps by Mail" service will be offered on Grand Island beginning Oct. 1

According to Postmaster Moynihan, this new service will permit customers to purchase stamps and stamped envelopes through the mail using a personal check or money order.

The postmaster noted that, "this service will be of great benefit to all our customers and especially shut-ins, the elderly and working wives. It will enable them to satisfy their postal needs simply, rapidly and inexpensively through their own homes." Leaflets spelling out the service will be distributed to area households and businesses this week. ...

A 40-cent fee will be charged to defray the cost of two-way postage, internal processing of checks and other costs associated with this new service.

Bikeway included in state bond issue

Construction of a three-mile bikeway from the Thruway south to Beaver Island State Park is on the bond issue list, Assemblyman William B. Hoyt and Sen. John B. Daly announced this week.

The proposed bikeway, included in the agreement reached with the governor and the state Legislature for the $1.25 billion "Rebuild New York" bond issue, would parallel South State Parkway with a 10-foot wide asphalt path for bikers, joggers and pedestrians.

"Grand Islanders have been waiting for the better part of a decade to see this bikeway a reality, so I am delighted that Sen. Daly and I were able to ensure its inclusion in the list of bond issue projects," said Assemblyman Hoyt. ...

The $200,000 construction project is among $7.4 billion in projects planned under the five-year transportation improvement program that will be made if possible if voters approve it on Nov. 8.

Riverfront underbrush to be removed

A project to clean up the underbrush that blocks the riverfront along West River Parkway is slated to begin on Monday.

A coalition of government agencies was assembled by Erie County Legislator Charles Swanick after he was approached by members of the West River Homeowners' Association.

"We originally put this cleanup project together a few years ago, said Swanick, and it was a great success. Now the various groups have agreed to work together again."

In addition to the labor force provided by the Erie County Department of Social Services HIRE Program, the New York State Department of Transportation will provide trucks and equipment, and the New York State Parks department will provide supervision for the workers.

Plans set for VFW's 'huge' annual chili cook-off

Officials at the Charles N. DeGlopper Post 9249 report that plans are set for its Ladies Auxiliary's "huge" annual chili cook-off and Chinese auction, Sunday, Oct. 12, with judging to begin at 1 p.m. at the Post, 2121 Grand Island Blvd.

Registration for the chili cook-off begins at noon, and an entry fee will be charged. Judging will be performed by such area notables as "Elvis," featuring Sean Dzierzanowski of Starline USA, Mary Dunbar-Dalusio and helpers from the staff of Fuccillo Chevrolet on the Island.
