Congressman Brian Higgins has announced the Niagara Falls Police Department has been awarded $208,255 through the Department of Justice's COPS Hiring Program.

"This funding will help the Niagara Falls Police Department make sure that they are adequately staffed to best meet the needs of its community," Higgins said.

"At this time of fiscal stress for upstate communities, this assistance, which helps defray the cost of providing public safety, is especially welcome," said Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster. "We are thankful to Congressman Higgins, and especially grateful that the city match is substantially lower than typically required."

The federal funding will be awarded to Niagara Falls over a three-year period, with a city match at only 2 percent, or $4,167.

CHP funding is used to directly support officer hiring at local law enforcement agencies to facilitate increased community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts. Grants provide the salary and benefits for officer and deputy hires for three years.

More than $125 million in CHP funding was awarded nationwide, with the NFPD one of only three recipients in New York.
