Toll collectors have non-owner applications

Grand Island residents who drive company or leased cars may apply for a non-owner application at arrowed tollbooths on the bridges.

A resident who wants to take advantage of the new law should show the collector both his driver's license to verify the address, and the vehicle's registration to verify non-ownership. He will then be given a form, "Resident Book Application Non-Owner," to complete and send with a check to the address listed on the form.

If the resident is eligible, the toll division supervisor will issue a "Grand Island Resident Book" stamped on the inside front cover, "Non-Owner," with an annual renewal date filled in (one year from application.)

Town vote may decide games of chance law

The town ballot in November may include voting on a referendum, which if approved, would create a games of chance licensing law here.

Requested by seven Grand Island organizations is a public hearing to consider placing a referendum to that effect on the 1993 election ballot.

The Town Board Monday authorized attorney Will Willes to inform the groups about the petition method required for voting on the issue "as soon as possible."

Those requesting the referendum are: Loyal Order of the Moose, Knights of Columbus, Grand Island Fire Co., Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Rod and Gun Club, and Sheridan Transit Road and Gun Club on Ransom Road.

Wendy's construction underway

Construction began this week on the new Wendy's restaurant (to be) located at the corner of Grand Island Boulevard and Staley Road. With the restaurant expected to open in late October or early November, passersby should see things take shape quickly.

Already this week steel work has been completed, framing has begun, and sewer service work is well underway on the boulevard.

A representative for Kulback's Construction, the general contractor for the project, indicated that for the most part construction is going smoothly and that they are doing their best to minimize disruption of local businesses. A water main was inadvertently broken during sewer work, attributed by Kulbacks to the mismarking of the water main location that resulted in the loss of water service to some local businesses for several hours.
