After a lengthy search, Niagara University has announced Katie Kocsis as its new director of financial aid.

Kocsis, who has served as assistant director in Niagara's office of financial aid since 2009, will assume her new role immediately. She replaces Maureen Salfi, who retired in February after almost 36 years at NU.

During her time as assistant director of financial aid, Kocsis accrued considerable knowledge on federal, state, NCAA and institutional policies and regulations. She has been instrumental in instituting several improvements within the financial aid office, including the transition into direct lending, and the automation of student TAP and PELL disbursements, which allows students to access their aid in a timelier fashion.

For her efforts, Kocsis was recognized as the university's employee of the month in June 2011.

"Niagara University is an institution that rewards excellent work," said Dr. Kevin Hearn, vice president for student affairs and interim dean of enrollment management. "Elevating Katie to director speaks to the outstanding progress that she's made as a financial aid professional, and it's also quite beneficial to the university to have a person overseeing that office with Katie's substantial institutional knowledge and experience. We are very pleased with this appointment."

Kocsis earned a bachelor's degree in education from NU in 2007, and attained a master's degree in special education in 2012. Upon completing her undergraduate studies, she became a receptionist in the office of financial aid, later working her way up to assistant director and, now, director.

In her new position, Kocsis will be responsible for providing oversight of the policies and procedures of financial assistance to students at NU, including those from federal, state, private and institutional sources, in accordance with governmental regulations and the mission of the university. She will also have a primary role in counseling and advising students, parents and the general community about opportunities to finance a college education.
