Western New York residents are expected to take steps to improve their heart health Sunday, Sept. 15, when they participate in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk at Coca-Cola Field in downtown Buffalo.

The 19th annual event raises critical funds to fight heart disease and stroke and begins with a health and wellness expo at 8 a.m. The non-competitive, three-mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m. The youngest survivors will be given superhero capes, and all participants will enjoy a walk route that takes advantage of Buffalo's waterfront. WGRZ's Maryalice Demler serves as the media chairwoman.

This year, survivors and their caretakers will be honored with a shortened survivor route for those unable to complete the three miles. The route will begin at Swan and Washington streets where participants will walk through "Memorial Garden" and "Survivor Gallery" paying special tribute to those suffering cardiovascular diseases.

Pre-event activities feature health screenings, an interactive Kids Zone, hands-only CPR demonstrations, massages, healthy snacks and pet-place.

Money raised at the Heart Walk is used to fund research and local advocacy, education and training programs. For information, call 716-614-1980 or visit www.buffaloniagaraheartwalk.org.
