Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, and State Sen. George Maziarz, R-C-I-Newfane, met this week with Gil Quiniones, president and CEO of the New York Power Authority. Ceretto, Maziarz and Quiniones discussed ways NYPA can better serve Western New York, including keeping NYPA revenues generated at the Robert Moses hydroelectric power station local; providing greater, low-cost electric services to the region; and improving tourism to the power station.

"Today's meeting with Gil Quiniones and Sen. Maziarz was very productive. They are valuable partners for improving Western New York's economy. NYPA is critical to the people of our region, so it is very important that we look for ways to maximize its benefits for Western New Yorkers," Ceretto said. "We are always looking for ways to improve the lives of the people that we serve. I am very thankful to have Gil Quiniones and Sen. Maziarz as allies in that mission."

NYPA was commissioned to build the Robert Moses hydroelectric power station in 1957 after the collapse of the Schoellkopf Power Station the previous year. Upon completion in 1961, the Robert Moses hydroelectric power station has provided low-cost power to New York and been a major economic force in Western New York.

Ceretto and Maziarz helped bring low-cost power back to Western New York by passing the Power Proceeds Bill in 2011. They said there has been some progress in the past three years with NYPA, but there is still work to be done. Ceretto will continue to meet with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Quiniones, and other leaders to create jobs and bolster economic development in Western New York.
