Students going back to school received an assist from a local business on Saturday.

The Cellular Connection, a wireless communications company with a branch located at 2162 Grand Island Blvd., in the Tops Plaza, gave away free backpacks and school supplies as part of The Culture of Good campaign. The event took place at 400 locations nationwide of The Cellular Connection.

"Our company The Cellular Connection has grown quite substantially over the past couple of years, so our CEO envisioned giving back to the communities that we're a part of," said Derek Megger, sales manager of The Cellular Connection on Grand Island.

Megger said the backpacks given away came with school supplies as well. He said the goal for the company was to give away 60,000 backpacks across the country in the areas in which TCC does business. The Cellular Connection planned to give away 50 backpacks at the GI location, and 1,500 in the Greater Buffalo area, he said, and what was not given away Saturday was bound for the school district. Megger noted that more information on the program's progress is available on Twitter at #tccrocks.
