The Niagara River Anglers held the 29th annual bass fishing contest on the Lower Niagara River on July 27.

Mike Heylek of Niagara Falls took home the first-place honor with two fish weighing in for a total of 7.98 pounds. His biggest fish weighed in at 4 lbs. It was caught on a live crawfish. His second entry weighed in at 3.98 lbs. It was caught on a baby bass color tube jig.

The biggest fish "Cash Bash" prize of the contest was caught and weighed in by Lloyd Schrack. It was a 4.41-pound specimen caught with a silver kwikfish lure while trolling off Four Mile Creek in 30 feet of water.

Contest Chairman Capt. Steve Drabczyk, owner of Creek Road Bait & Tackle, reported, "Big numbers of fish were caught throughout the system. One boat boasted a 70-fish day."

"The Niagara Bar near the green buoy and the coast guard drift were the ticket," he added.

This is a contest that has seen more than 100 participants.

The next scheduled fishing contest for the Anglers is the annual Lower Niagara River Walleye Contest, to be held Saturday, Aug. 24. Details are available at www.niagarariveranglers.com, or stop in at Creek Road Bait & Tackle, 4419 Creek Road, Lewiston.
