Queen City Roller Girls' team The Lake Effect Furies has announced it was invited to play at the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 2 Playoffs in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Aug. 23-25.

Teams that are ranked 41-60 on June 30 are eligible for the WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs. The Furies moved up from 61st to 54th as of the June 30 rankings, which gives them the sixth seed spot in the tournament.

The Queen City Roller Girls is the only women's flat track roller derby league in Western New York (since 2006). The league has four home teams that compete at the Rainbow Rink in North Tonawanda (Alley Kats, Devil Dollies, Nickel City Knockouts and the Suicidal Saucies), and the WFTDA-chartered team, The Lake Effect Furies, which competes internationally for rankings.

"It is extremely relieving and satisfying to make D2 playoffs. The Furies have had a goal of making playoffs for some time now, and to finally see it realized is truly rewarding," said Lake Effect Furies Co-Coach Guy O. Tine. "Every player on this team has contributed both on and off the track and can take pride in knowing that we started out as a long shot, but once our back was to the wall we responded with a will and desire that simply would not be denied.

"We have all learned, grown, and bonded as a team this season, and I think that shows through in the team's cohesion on the track and work ethic at practice. Now that we've finished part one of our goal, being invited to playoffs, we can start thinking about the next step: showing everyone at playoffs exactly what Furies derby is all about."

The teams joining the Lake Effect Furies at the WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs are:

1. Santa Cruz Derby Girls, Santa Cruz, Calif.
2. Sac City Rollers, Sacramento, Calif.
3. Killamazoo Derby Darlins, Kalamazoo
4. Carolina Rollergirls, Raleigh, N.C.
5. NEO Roller Derby, Akron, Ohio
6. Queen City Roller Girls, Buffalo
7. Paper Valley Roller Girls, Appleton, Wis.
8. Tri-City Roller Girls, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
9. Burning River Roller Girls, Cleveland
10. Suburbia Roller Derby, Yonkers

Ten other teams will compete in the other WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in Des Moines, Iowa, on Aug. 16-18. The winners of both Division 2 playoffs will meet in Milwaukee in November at the WFTDA Championships to play the deciding Division 2 game.

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association is the international governing body for the sport of women's flat track roller derby, and a membership organization for leagues to collaborate and network. The WFTDA sets standards for rules, seasons and safety, and determines guidelines for the international athletic competitions of member leagues.

There are currently 197 WFTDA member leagues and 98 affiliated leagues in the WFTDA Apprentice program worldwide. The WFTDA is governed by a five-member, volunteer board of directors and managed by an executive director.
