Local leaders to launch demolition at Riviera Theatre

Brownfield site behind arts venue to be leveled

The removal of a polluted eyesore behind one of the region's premiere performing arts venues will be marked by local community leaders Thursday as the site's demolition ceremonially begins.

North Tonawanda's Riviera Theatre will hold a groundbreaking, of sorts, to initiate demolition of the Competition Transmission building, located at 68 Main St. - directly behind the historic theater. Removal of the structure and contaminated soil at the site is being funded through a Niagara County Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund grant.

The structure's demolition also lays the groundwork for the Riviera's long-term expansion and economic development plans. The Riviera Theatre is located at 67 Webster St.

Tours of the Riviera Theatre will follow the event.

Wojtaszek, R-North Tonawanda; County Legislature Economic Development Committee Chairwoman Kathryn Lance, R-North Tonawanda; Common Council President Rich L. Andres Jr., R-North Tonawanda; representatives of Rep. Brian Higgins, D-NY; Riviera Theatre Executive Director Frank J. Cannata; Riviera Theatre Director of Development Gary J. Rouleau.
