Niagara University's Eagle alumni magazine has won a 2013 American Inhouse Design Award.

The nationwide competition is held by Graphic Design USA, a news magazine for graphic designers and creative professionals. It is open to corporations, associations and other institutions with in-house design departments and honors exceptional new work of all kinds across all media.

This year, more than 4,000 entries were submitted, with only the top 15 percent warranting a Certificate of Excellence.

The Eagle, Niagara University's quarterly alumni publication, was redesigned in fall 2011 with a larger page size, season-specific color palette, additional photo usage and a renewed focus on storytelling. The new look garnered a 2012 APEX Grand Award for Publication Excellence.

"These awards validate the high-quality of our communications materials, and offer deserved recognition to our extremely talented department," said Tom Burns, associate vice president for public relations, communications and marketing. "Congratulations especially to Lisa McMahon, Eagle editor, and Sue Karaszewski, graphic designer, for presenting excellent stories on our students and alumni in a manner that represents their accomplishments, and the university, well."

According to its website, Graphic Design USA has sponsored national design competitions that spotlight areas of excellence and opportunity for creative professionals for nearly five decades. Of these, the American Inhouse Design Awards is the original and the premier showcase for outstanding work by in-house designers. For many years, it has provided a unique opportunity for in-house design, marketing and communications departments to be recognized for their talent, or the special challenges they face, and for their contributions to their businesses and institutions.
