Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for June 21, 2013

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 511 calls from May 25 to June 14. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 44 burglary false alarm calls and 11 fire alarms during the dates of this report.

Saturday, May 25

•Love Road, burglary - Deputies responded to an alarm call at Kaegebein Elementary School late at night and upon arrival located several windows that were open. Deputies searched the building and found damage to numerous classrooms inside the school. No persons were found inside the building. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Long Road, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle at the Metz Building during the early morning hours. Deputies were able to locate the occupants on the property and advised them to leave the premise at the owner's request. The subjects left without incident.

•West Oakfield Road, parking violation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was illegally parked on the roadway. Deputies issued the vehicle a parking summons.

•Wallace Drive, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a motorcycle was racing up and down the street. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Sunday, May 26

•East River Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence in the neighborhood. Deputies located the residence and advised the subjects to turn down the music.

•Love Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that youths in the area appeared to be pulling pranks and throwing things in the roadway. Deputies removed a hammock from the roadway but were unable to locate any subjects involved.

•Grand Island Boulevard, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Tracey Lane, welfare check - Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke to the homeowner and determined the call to be a misdial.

•East River Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a turtle was in the roadway. Deputies removed the turtle to the side of the road.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle nearly struck a person in the parking lot of a business and then left in an unknown direction. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

•Ward Park Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that he found damage on his vehicle while it was parked on the street overnight. The complainant was unsure how the damage occurred.

Monday, May 27

•Stony Point Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke to the homeowner and determined the call to be a malfunction with the phone.

•South State Parkway, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a subject was screaming at cars that were driving by him. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject.

•Carol Lane, residential burglary - A complainant stated that, sometime during the weekend, someone broke into his residence and stole an undetermined amount of money from a safe. Erie County Sheriff's Office detectives are currently looking for a person of interest in the matter. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Sixth Street, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence in the neighborhood. Deputies located the residence and advised the subjects to turn down the music.

Tuesday, May 28

•Whitehaven Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke to the homeowner and determined the call to be a misdial.

•East River Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, while she was at work, someone stole her iPad from her locker. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Wednesday, May 29

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•LaSalle Avenue, larceny - A complainant stated that she recently had a party at her residence and afterwards noticed a large sum of cash was missing from her home. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Staley Road, wire down - Deputies responded to a report of wires down. National Grid was notified.

•Baseline Road, accident injury - Deputies responded to a report of a juvenile struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was issued a traffic ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court. The juvenile was transported to a local hospital with seemingly not life-threatening injuries.

•Love Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a car that had struck a building. No injuries were reported.

•Ward Park Road, fight - A complainant stated that five or six subjects were fighting in the street. Prior to the arrival of patrol, several subjects fled in a vehicle. Deputies located all other subjects involved, who refused to cooperate with the police. The subjects were advised.

•Baseline Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle that had struck Sidway Elementary School. No injuries were reported and damage to the building appeared to be very minor.

•Elsie Lane, animal loose - A complainant stated that a dog was running loose in the neighborhood. The dog control officer was notified.

Wednesday, June 5

•Autumnwood Drive, suspicious person - A complainant stated that she could see a subject walking in her back yard with a flashlight. Deputies located the subject, who was a Time Warner Cable employee that was doing work in the area.

•Waterford Park, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of an individual who applied for a pistol permit.

•Grand Island Boulevard, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that while he was shopping in a supermarket, an unknown vehicle struck his parked car in the lot.

Thursday, June 6

•Ransom Road, suspicious person with vehicle - A complainant stated that several vehicles were parked behind Grand Island High School late at night and appeared to be occupied by several subjects. The complainant was concerned the subjects were going to try to get on the roof of the school. The vehicles left prior to the arrival of patrol. No damage was observed.

•Foxcroft Street, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a male subject was walking through neighbors' yards. The complainant lost sight of the male prior to the arrival of patrol. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any subjects matching the description.

Friday, June 7

•Riverdale Drive, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone stole various items from her unlocked vehicle.

•Broadway, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone stole various items from her unlocked vehicle.

•Enola Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent days, someone stole his son's bike from the yard.

Saturday, June 8

•Grand Island Boulevard, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was parked in the drive-thru of a doughnut shop, and it appeared the driver was sleeping. The vehicle left in an unknown direction prior to the arrival of patrol. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property found - A complainant stated he found a female's wallet in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant. Deputies contacted the owner and the property was returned.

•South Lane, parking violation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was parked the wrong way on the street. Deputies located the owner and advised him.

•Winkler Drive, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent hours, someone had damaged her mailbox. Deputies did not observe any damage to the mailbox, which was put back into place by the complainant.

•Hazelwood Lane, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was being played from a nearby residence. Deputies spoke to the occupants, who agreed to turn the music down.

Sunday, June 9

•Calvano Drive, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle occupied by numerous subjects during the late hours of the night. The subjects were advised and left without incident.

•East River Road, drunk driving - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 29-year-old man from Tonawanda for driving while intoxicated. The man registered a .17 of 1 percent blood-alcohol content after submitting a sample of his breath for chemical analysis. He was also charged with felony DWI due to a previous DWI conviction in the last 10 years. He was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending his arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Whitehaven Road, suspicious incident - Deputies found several hypodermic needles located in the parking lot of a gas station. The needles were removed from the lot and discarded in a biohazard medical waste container.

•Grand Island Boulevard, disorderly person - Employees of a business stated that an intoxicated male subject was causing a disturbance on the property. The subject was escorted from the park without further incident.

•Riverview Court, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a large turtle was seen in the roadway and he was worried it would be struck by a vehicle. Deputies relocated the turtle to the side of the road.

•Baseline Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was travelling slowly down the road. Deputies located the vehicle at a nearby residence and advised the driver.

•Ransom Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence in the area. Deputies checked and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

Monday, June 10

•Staley Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a horse was running loose and believed the animal belonged to a neighbor. Deputies checked the area but did not observe any loose horses.

•Whitehaven Road, larceny - Employees at a hotel stated that a guest wished to speak with patrol about a larceny that occurred from a hotel room. The guest checked out and left prior to speaking with patrol.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious person - A complainant stated that he saw an elderly female standing beside the road and remembered seeing her there a few hours ago. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the female.

•Grand Island Boulevard, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

Tuesday, June 11

•Whitehaven Road, suspicious person - Deputies located a female subject walking on the road during the late hours of the night. The female stated she was walking home from work.

•West River Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone slashed the tires on his vehicle and keyed it.

•East River Road, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that a vehicle drove over his lawn and damaged his concrete driveway. Deputies were able to locate the driver from pieces of the suspect vehicle left at the accident scene. The driver was issued traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Whitehaven Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was swerving in and out of lanes on the I-190. The vehicle then exited at Whitehaven Road and the complainant lost sight of it. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

•Bedell Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that someone damaged picnic tables at the Miracle League Field in Veterans Park by removing planks of wood from them. No further damage was observed.

•Ward Park, suspicious person with vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious female subject was rummaging through garbage cans in the neighborhood and appeared to be on drugs. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject.

•Fix Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a vehicle was parked in the driving lane on the roadway. Deputies located the vehicle, which was not in any violations of parking ordinances.

Wednesday, June 12

•Whitney Lane, larceny - A complainant stated that a male subject was walking on the street late at night and appeared to have entered his neighbor's vehicle. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject. The vehicle in question was reported as having several items missing. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Baseline Road, person down - A complainant stated that a subject was lying in the ditch on the side of the road. Deputies located the intoxicated subject and gave him a courtesy ride to his residence.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, forgery - Employees at a fast-food restaurant stated that a subject passed a counterfeit $20 bill. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Baseline Road, suspicious person with vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious-looking male subject was in a white van parked on the road. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject.

•Love Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was swerving and cutting off other vehicles. The complainant lost sight of the vehicle while patrol was responding. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any vehicles matching the description.

•Marilyn Drive, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a male subject was inside of his garage during the late hours of the night. When the complainant asked the male what he was doing the subject responded he had permission to be there. The subject then left in an unknown direction. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject. Nothing was reported missing or damaged.

Thursday, June 13

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•East River Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Tracey Lane, larceny - A complainant stated that she left her purse on the driveway while unloading groceries from the store. The complainant found her purse on Laurie Lane, but the contents were missing. The complainant did not observe any subjects in the area.

•Wallace Drive, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that someone egged his house.

•Stony Point Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the roadway. The vehicle pulled into a garage of a nearby residence shortly after. Deputies spoke to the driver and advised her.

Friday, June 14

•Schwegler Road, suspicious person with vehicle - Deputies located a parked vehicle occupied by several subjects during the late hours of the night. The subjects were advised and left without incident.

•West Park Road, shots fired - A complainant stated she heard a single gunshot ring out but was unsure of where it came from. No other 911 calls were received. Deputies checked the area and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

•Huth Road, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that a vehicle struck a street sign and left glass on the roadway from the collision. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle in question. No damage was done to the sign.

•Park Place, youth activity - A complainant stated that two youths were riding a golf cart in the roadway and were almost struck by a vehicle. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the youths.

•East River Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that two subjects were going door-to-door and soliciting for money. Deputies located the subjects and advised them to file the proper paperwork with the Town of Grand Island. The subjects left without incident.

•East River Road, youth activity - A complainant stated a large group of youths was walking around with flashlights and making a lot of noise during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the youths and advised them.
