Five members of the Niagara County Child Abuse Intervention Project were honored recently for their hard work and dedication during a recognition luncheon at Erie Canalside Banquets in Lockport. All those honored were nominated by their peers.

They are:

  • Tough CAIPer - Detective Travis Mapes, Lockport Police Department
  • Newbie CAIPer - Family Services Advocate Kara Sciarrino, Child Advocacy Center of Niagara
  • Honorable Mention CAIPer - Crime Victim Specialist Martha LaCorte, New York State Police
  • Honorary CAIPer - Vice President Mary Brennan-Taylor, YWCA of Niagara.

"Our team members and community partners work day in and day out with victims of abuse and their families," said Laura Kelemen, executive director of the Child Advocacy Center of Niagara. "They are compassionate, dedicated and determined to prevent and treat child abuse, and to seek justice and healing for the victims and families they serve. Each and every CAIP team member deserves recognition and respect."

The Child Abuse Intervention Project is a multidisciplinary team of community partners, including law enforcement, Child Protective Services, the district attorney's office, medical and mental health personnel and Child Advocacy Center of Niagara staff who work together to prevent, treat, investigate and prosecute child abuse within a child-friendly setting.

The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara, a service of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, is a countywide resource providing a place for multi-disciplinary teams to investigate allegations of child abuse in a child-friendly environment.
