Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, today helped pass the Safe Patient Handling Act. The bill, which he co-sponsored, establishes a statewide patient handling policy for all health care facilities in New York. Ceretto noted this policy ensures that best practices in regard to safe patient handling are followed in medical facilities across New York state.

"I am proud to sponsor and help pass the Safe Patient Handling Act, which protects both medical practitioners and patients. It is important that the very best methods for patient handling are used in order to avoid unnecessary injuries to both nurses and patients," Ceretto said. "Health care practitioners will now be trained in the best patient handling practices, and patients can rest assured that they are receiving the best possible care."

Proper handling of patients can help avoid skin tears, falls, drops, bruising, anxiety and fear. For health care workers, proper handling can help decrease pain, muscle fatigue, injuries and can help them increase their performance on the job.
