Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, and State Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane, passed legislation designed to protect taxpayers and ensure that money from the New York Power Authority is not wasted. The legislation would allow NYPA to perform audits of funding it provides to local governments, state agencies and other development projects in Western New York.

Ceretto's camp said this oversight is an important check to make sure the money taken from NYPA for projects in Western New York is properly spent.

"I am happy to announce that I have worked with Sen. Maziarz to pass this important oversight for NYPA funding. Allowing NYPA to audit its funds given to other projects brings accountability and ensures that Western New York gets maximum value from NYPA's investments," Ceretto said. "The funding from NYPA is incredibly important for the economic development of Western New York. By making sure we do it right, we can grow our economy and create jobs for all Western New Yorkers."

As of January, NYPA provided $208 million in funding for various projects in Western New York. However, questions have been raised about the management of funds by the Niagara River Greenway Commission and other municipalities. Ceretto's camp said authorizing NYPA to audit the use of these funds is an important oversight to protect the interests of Western New Yorkers who want to see an improved economy and increased job creation.

The legislation passed the Senate last week, and passed in the Assembly today. It is now being sent to the governor's desk for approval.
