A $750,000 challenge grant from The John R. Oishei Foundation to the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center Foundation has given a jump start to Memorial's $3 million campaign for a new inpatient cardiac/stroke care center. The grant is conditioned on Memorial raising a matching amount.

The campaign, in its early or "quiet phase," has topped the $1 million mark with the Oishei challenge.

"The Niagara region continues to experience some of the worst rates of cardiovascular disease in the nation. This campaign will fund an all-new inpatient cardiac and stroke treatment center that will focus on patient- and family-centered care, utilize the latest technology, and provide the utmost in comfort and safety," said Memorial President and CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo.

Niagara Falls Memorial was the first hospital in Niagara County to be designated a stroke center by the New York State Department of Health and is a multiple-time recipient of American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines - Gold and Gold Plus Quality Achievement Awards for heart and stroke care.

Amenities in Memorial's new cardiac care/stroke center will include rehabilitation facilities on the same floor as patient rooms, a resource center to support patient/family learning and medical education, "smart room" technology, and a design that supports more nursing time at the bedside.

In 2012, more than 1,500 patients were hospitalized in Memorial's existing cardiac/stroke unit.

The John R. Oishei Foundation strives to be a catalyst for change to enhance economic vitality and the quality of life for the Buffalo/Niagara region. The foundation was established in 1940 by John R. Oishei, founder of Trico Products Corp.

"We are so grateful to The John R. Oishei Foundation for this challenge and this vote of confidence," said campaign Chairwoman Judith Nolan Powell. "The new cardiac/stroke care center will truly make a difference in the lives of patients and their families by providing them with the very best care to help them return home as soon as possible."
