It takes more than a steady downpour of rain and gray skies to keep Niagara County's senior citizens away from the annual Senior Walk in the Park.

Niagara County has hosted SWIP since 2001. On June 6, the free event was held for the second year in a row at Town of Niagara's Veterans Park on Lockport Road. Despite the weather, about 180 seniors attended, according to county officials.

While most of the seniors stuck close to the Calvin K. Richards Senior Center/Youth Activity Center or stayed under the big tent outside, a few did venture out for the walks on the park trails.

Those inside visited information booths of area businesses offering everything from senior living residences to a dog taxi service. They also played a game of "Cereal Jeopardy" to take home a box of a General Mills cereal. They pulled up the hoods of their jackets and sat either under the tent or huddled under the building's overhang to eat a free lunch, listen to music and hope their ticket number would be drawn for a door prize.

"This is always a good time. We come every year. We just wouldn't miss it. Even in the rain, it's always a good time," said Town of Niagara resident Pat Garlock.

Wilson resident Esther Myers had the last word, however. "Please order better weather next year," she said.
