Town of Grand Island

Hello, Grand Islanders!

With the nice weather and people outdoors, many dogs are also out and about. Dogs are required to be licensed after the age of 4 months. Licenses cost $8 and can be purchased at the town clerk's office. Besides being required by state law, you'll be very glad your dog has its license tag if it runs away from you because the tag insures that the dog is easily returned to you. In order to get a license, the dog needs a rabies vaccination. Free rabies clinics conducted by the Erie County Department of Health will be on May 22, 4 to 7 p.m. at the American Legion Post No. 1041 at 533 Amherst St. in Buffalo. A week later on May 29, also from 4 to 7 p.m., a rabies clinic will be held at Erie Community College South, 4041 Southwestern Blvd. (Building No. 7 Maintenance Garage adjacent to the Erie County Department of Motor Vehicles) in Orchard Park. The shots are available for dogs, cats and ferrets.

The Island's largest amount of e-waste recycling since the program began in January 2012 happened on April 24 when RCR&R took 3,400 pounds! These items are no longer allowed in the garbage, so please remember to take all e-waste to the Town Highway Garage at 1820 Whitehaven Road. The town is paid $.086 per pound for these materials. In a related matter, the AbiBow Paper Recycling Company has 10 green and yellow dumpsters around town to take newsprint and office paper. More than 167 tons of papers were collected in 2012 with the sponsoring churches, schools and Friends of GI Memorial Library being paid by AbiBow for the paper.

May is Older Americans Month, and we were honored to have Grand Island's Golden Age Club lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the Town Board meeting on May 6. Their annual Gram's Garage Sale will take place at the Nike Base, 3278 Whitehaven Road on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Get there early for the best selection at the bake sale. It always sells out!

The Community Center at the Nike Base will see some improvements over the summer as a result of a grant award through the Help Americans Vote Act. New handicap accessible entrance doors, with push button openers, will be installed and lights will be added to the parking lot. The surface of the parking lot and the concrete sidewalk joining the parking lot to the Community Center will be rehabilitated. In addition to being a polling location for voting at least twice a year, the Community Center is used on average 28 days each month for various meetings. These improvements will benefit everyone!

The Drug Drop-Off Day, held on April 27 at the Town Hall, saw 374 pounds of drugs turned in for proper disposal. This was the Island's fourth collection and the largest amount of drugs turned in yet. If you missed the event and have unused or unwanted prescriptions in your home, you'll soon have a very convenient solution. The Sheriff's Drug Drop Box will be installed, likely at Town Hall, very soon. You may also take these items to the Island Prescription Center, 1728 Grand Island Blvd., for proper disposal.

If you would like your assessment reviewed, make an appointment by calling Assessor Judy Tafelski at 773-9600, ext. 648. The Board of Assessment Review will meet on Tuesday, May 28, and Thursday, May 30, but you must have an appointment.

The fourth-graders have been visiting the Town Hall during May as they take their Historical Tour of Grand Island. It's a treat to have them looking around at all of the artifacts housed at Town Hall and asking questions. They learn from the town clerk, the court clerk and this year, a New York State Police officer was present in the substation to talk with the students, answer questions and show them the jail cell. Besides touring Town Hall, the fourth-graders spend time at River Lea, home of the Grand Island Historical Society in Beaver Island State Park. They also drive through Ferry Village, see the ice house on East River Road south of Fix Road and see the smokehouse left from the Whitehaven Settlement near the tennis courts at the Holiday Inn. Each fourth-grader receives a "Historic Grand Island Self-Guided Tour" brochure. You can get a copy in the kiosk in the Town Hall lobby and take the tour at your leisure.

The town's Memorial Day Services will be held on Monday, May 27, at 10 a.m. at DeGlopper Park, on the corner of Baseline Road and Grand Island Boulevard. Gold Star Mothers Shirley Luther and Mary Ann Crowe will be honored, the Roll will be called, the Honor Guard will give a gun salute and a wreath will be placed at the monument in the park. The guest speaker will be Lt. Col. Paul T. Dansereau. The Grand Island High School Wind Ensemble will be treating us to beautiful patriotic music. Hope to see you there! Don't forget the cemetery services that happen at all six Grand Island cemeteries beginning at 7:40 a.m. at Whitehaven Cemetery.

It is a pleasure to see and talk with so many of you. Thanks for all of your ideas and please continue to keep in touch at 716-773-9600, ext. 616, or [email protected].
