On Friday, Assemblywoman Jane Corwin, in an effort to help restock the shelves of many local charities that have run bare, delivered food to local Western New York food banks as part of her "Annual Food Drive to Combat Hunger."

Over the past month, residents of Erie and Niagara County have donated more than 750 pounds of food, which will feed more than 200 families in Western New York. Erie and Niagara County libraries, as well as the assemblywoman's office, served as drop-off locations for the donations.

"I am thrilled that this food drive continues to grow every year. We were able to top last year's donation amount by a few hundred pounds," Corwin said. "It says a lot about our community because we have compassion and selflessness. It's the people of Western New York that make this such a wonderful place to live."

Corwin delivered the donations to three locations in the area: the Akron Food Pantry at Trinity Lutheran Church, the Newfane First Baptist Church and the Newfane Community Food Pantry at St. Brendan's on the Lake.

"Unfortunately, after the holiday season is over, donations become less frequent at many food pantries. I am very thankful to everyone who was gracious enough to donate. Every little bit helped and will go a long way in feeding families and children that are in need," Corwin said. "I would also like to thank the local food banks for all of their hard work, and a special thank you to all of the libraries and staff that allowed us to use their locations as collection sites."

For information on how you can get contribute or make a donation, contact Corwin via email at [email protected]; write to her at 8180 Main St., Clarence, NY 14221; or call 716-839-4690.
