Assemblyman John Ceretto is teaming up with the Firemen's Association of the State of New York to help promote this year's statewide volunteer firefighter recruitment drive, Recruit NY, which will take place at firehouses across the state on April 27-28.

Ceretto will be joining his fellow members of Lewiston No. 2 Volunteer Fire Co. on Saturday to help publicize the event and discuss the many benefits of becoming a volunteer firefighter. Lewiston No. 2's RecruitNY drive runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27. There will be refreshments served at the event, as well as several emergency skills demonstrations that include the "Jaws of Life" and other fire equipment, and giveaways for children.

"RecruitNY is a coordinated effort to boost membership in volunteer fire departments, which has decreased in recent years," Ceretto said. "Volunteer firefighters provide essential services to our communities, often putting themselves in harm's way to save the lives and property of their friends and neighbors.

"For their service, volunteer firefighters can receive a number of tax breaks, medical insurance, and may also receive assistance paying for college. I would encourage anyone interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer firefighter to stop by one of the area firehouses participating in this weekend's recruitment drive."

Ceretto said several volunteer fire departments from his district are participating in this year's recruitment event, including Adams Fire Co., Bergholz Fire Company, Frontier Fire Company, Lewiston No. 2, Shawnee Volunteer Fire Co., St. Johnsburg Fire Co., Town of Niagara Active Hose, Tri-Community Ambulance Service and Upper Mountain Fire Co.
