Board seeks relicensing money to pursue sewer repairs

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston voted 4-0 Monday to lessen the tax burden on residents. Board members (minus an excused Bruce Sutherland) adopted a local law amending Section 20-139 of the municipal code to lower the sanitary sewer rate from $4.65 per 100 cubic feet of consumption to $4.59. They also approved an amendment to Section 20-194 reducing the water rate from $3.55 per 100 cubic feet to $3.49. Finally, trustees voted to remove the $5-per-billing-cycle capital water/sewer improvement surcharge.

These changes will take effect July 1.

Trustees adopted a resolution to ask the Town of Lewiston for New York Power Authority relicensing money. The board is eyeing $298,500 worth of capital improvements. Areas targeted for improvement include North Ninth Street (replacing the 6-inch water main line with a 12-inch replacement; cost: $200,000); East Lane (working with the town to replace 300 linear feet of 8-inch sanitary sewer; $55,000); North Fourth Street, from Oneida Street to Chicora Road (installing approximately 1,200 linear feet of 12-inch storm sewer; $25,000); Guard Street (water line replacement; $16,000); and Mohawk Street near West Lane (locate and repair sewer lateral; $2,500).

Mayor Terry Collesano said the village would look to cover any expenses not covered by the Town of Lewiston with a bond.
